Proposed Kitchen Design for John & Carol Alder
The clients, John and Carol Alder, who are in their mid-50s are in the process of completing a remodel to their 25-year-old ranch-style home. The couple has two sons, aged 18 and 21 and their pets; a cat and a dog. They are planning to remain in their home after retirement, and wish to incorporate elements that allow them to age in place in the new kitchen.

Their request was to open up the proposed kitchen to the living room to create a “great room” concept. They prefer the new combined space to have an open, relaxed feel and require 4-6 seating at a breakfast table to entertain guests. Moreover; sufficient storage for regular kitchen items, a beverage centre and a few cabinets with glass doors to display a teapot collection, energy-efficient appliances are required as well.
To successfully achieve these requirements, the proposed kitchen design;
- Open kitchen space to the living room
- Counter space is maximized with the use of integrated appliances
- Energy Star-rated appliances and WaterSense-certified kitchen faucet
- Warming drawer with auto turn-off feature to keep prepared meals warm for a longer time and save energy
- A breakfast bar with sufficient seating space for four people and a beverage centre required by John without intruding on the kitchen preparation area.
- Two wall cabinets directly in front of the breakfast bar with glass doors for Carol to display her teapot collection
- Pull-out two bin waste unit inside the sink cabinet to improve accessibility and to maintain the clean ambience
- All the cabinets with pull instead of flush/ finger groove handles to aid aging-in-place
- In addition, to preserve the transitional aesthetic of the house, a neutral and earthy colour palette with green, beige, brown, white and wood tones is maintained in the kitchen. Matte
- Black appliances/ faucet and Brushed Nickel cabinet pull and the pendant light secure a sheen against this neutral colour palette.
- The accent wall featuring two large wall frames is painted with an Antique Jade shade from the Benjamin Moore Classics collection to add a touch of colour to the overall space. French
- Oak wooden flooring and Altamonte quartz from Wilsonart create depth and character inside the kitchen.

In conclusion; the client’s requirements are satisfied through integrated appliances with high-efficiency, sustainable and durable materials with elevated performance, and through preserving the transitional ambience of the kitchen to correspond to the ranch-style house.
